Recently Twiddleybitz held a Scrap My Photo Competition

where members were invited to upload their photos and 10 random winners were drawn

and 10 of the Twiddleybitz Design Team would scrap their photos.

Gypsylcm was one of the winners and I was the lucky DT member who got to create with the beautiful photo of her Nana, Catherine.

I have tucked a blank journalling tag behind the photo so Gypsy could fill in any extra details about Catherine or the photo.

I must admit to feeling quite nervous scrapping for someone else. :-)

The lovely Tiff Sawyer from Scrap Sanity sent me a kit to play with.
I love that she challenged me with some bright papers, but I still seemed to end up toning things down and made a vintagey layout.
I can't seem to get my head around brights...I admire those that can. :-)
This is my daughter meeting her Nanna for the very first time.
Using Basic Grey Kissing Booth papers and embellishments from the kit and of course I managed to add some Twiddleybitz :-)

An entry for the new challenge site Scrap That Song which is pretty cool.

The criteria was to scrap a nursery ryhme. I kind of tweaked it and scrapped about singing nursery ryhmes......and the rest. :-) Unfortunately I didn't scrap when my children were babies and toddlers and I really regret not taking more photos of them at that age, so I scrapped a nursery rhyme book instead and told the story with its help.
so my advice to new parents????
Photos!! lots and lots of photos!!!...especially with todays digital and phone cameras and computers to
store them all....oh to have THAT technology 14 years ago!!

Remembrance

I scrapped this last year on Remembrance Day.
It was picked up for publication and I had to remove it and I thought I

might share it with you again.
Every Anzac Day and Remembrance Day I often think of what these men must of gone through.
They are my husband on the right...although he didn't get to go to Vietnam (something he regretted at the time) he did train for it.. but was in the hospital after emergency operation on the eve of departure.
He watched the ship, and his mates, leave port from his hospital bed...
and some of them didn't come home.
In the main photo is my husband's grandfather Tom with his son Eddy.
Uncle Eddy served in WWII

and Tom served in BOTH World Wars.
These men were lucky, they came home. But I wonder what terrible things they saw, and how many

mates they lost along the way.
Every Anzac Day and Remembrance Day

I think of them, the mates they served with, and especially on Remembrance day,
the mates they lost,

and also those serving for us today.

And I say Thank You and I will Remember..and I will do my best to make sure my children do to.

This is my Secret Garden Shadow Box.

and yes it is rather big.

I have used a Twiddleybitz ornate shelf and adhered it to the front of a 12x12 shadowbox.

I cut the ornate flourish off the top of the shelf and added it to the top of the shadow box

painted it and then added TBZ rusting powder all over it.

LOVE LOVE LOVE that stuff!

I did the same with the TBZ Birdhouse and the Wishing Well.

and the wheelbarrow, and the shovel and watering can and the fence and the chicken wire..and .....

well, probably the only piece of TBZ I didn't use rusting powder on was the tree

(I used Impasto on that. ;-) )

So that was my Secret Garden Shadow Box.

I feel a bit sad/disappointed/curious whenever I see this photo.

All I know about Julia is that she is my husbands great grandmother.
Her name is Julia and she was his Mother's father's Mother.
lol...did that make sense?
It is a bit sad that all that we know about her is her name.
I would LOVE to know more about her story..but unfortunately there isn't anyone alive today who knows it.
This is why I love scrapping these old photos...if DH's mother had trouble remembering her name, how on earth are her grandchildren going to know it??
At least Julia's great great grandchildren know her name and hopefully their children will too.

And Julia hasn't been totally forgotten.

We had to use Pink and Black only, with only a smidgeon of another colour if we had to.

When my daughter saw the layout I did of her brother with Trixie she asked if I was going to do one of her with Trixie as well.
Using a wallpaper sample as the background.
and note the stitching?? yep, thats why I don't use a sewing machine! We just dont get on.
I think sewing machines see me coming and clench in fright. I had so much problems with the sewing machine at the retreat..(thank you Trish and Sonia for your help lol)

A double!! I haven't done a double in ages...and now I remember why I haven't!!
I found this quite tricky, not sure I will be in a hurry to do another one!! lol.
But, as I have lots of holiday snaps that need scrapping I think I might have to bite the bullet and give it another go soon. ;-)
The flowers are from a placemat that a friend gave me...thanks Maryanne!! They are made of felt. So cool.

Well hello there!!
It has been a while hasn't it?
This past month has been pretty much hectic with work, and also emotionally draining, after the passing of my brother in law. Scrapping has been pretty much non existant. So I was pretty happy when I managed to finally finish this layout. It has been sitting half finished for quite a while and it got to the point when I thought...just finish the darn thing!! lol.
This is for Sue's Quote challenge from last month, combining it with this month's sketch challenge over at escape2create
I love the Twiddleybitz chicken mesh wire and the barbed wire fences. Perfect for boys pages, which is something that I struggle with. ;-)

Sampson

This is the "reveal" of the sneak peak which I posted a few posts ago.

The photo is of Sampson.

We had to put Samspon down a few years ago, and I still miss him dearly.

He was 16 and probably my best friend.

He was always there for me, always. He seemed to know when I was feeling down, he would come and put his head on my lap or sit close by.

I still harbour guilt issues about putting him down. Silly I know, he was old and unwell and it was for the best, but yet, they are still there.
The vet came to our house. I wanted Sampson to go to sleep in his beloved basket when the time came and the vet was so compassionate about it all. I held Sampsons paw the whole time and assisted the vet. It was the most hardest, heartbreaking and gut wrenching thing I have ever had to do and I cried the whole time.

But I felt I owed it to him, for all those years of loyalty and friendship. If you know what I mean??

And to this day I hope and pray he understood why.

This poem has always helped put my mind at ease a little.

He was your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.

You were his life, his love, his leader.

He was yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.

You owed it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

Spray painted the easel black (although it looks really really good without anything on it as well!) and then just played.

Beach Frame

Found this last night on my blog hops and I just HAD to share.

Crackle WITHOUT crackle medium!!
and IT WORKS!!
I tried it out tonight and it gave me the same result as crackle medium.
I still prefer the Tim Holtz crackle paint, but that can get a tad expensive when you are creating large projects, such as a frame etc.

Make the Best of Things

All you use is paint and white craft glue and you don't have to wait aaages for it to dry between coats.
I finished my 12 x 12 frame in less than half an hour....from start to finish.
and soooo inexpensive
gotta love that!

I have been drawn to bright colours lately. Maybe in subliminal retaliation to all the sadness we have been seeing lately? I don't know.

These photos were taken back in 2009 when we holidayed at the Gold Coast.
We stayed at Ashmore Palms and LOVED it, and would recommend it to anyone that is planning a holiday up that way.
Swimming pools, great accommodation, fantastic aviary, kids activities and close to all the Worlds.And there is even a scrapbook shop in the nearby shopping centre! (unfortunately I only found this out when we got back home!!! lol)

Ryan saw this layout, smiled, and promptly asked if we could go back there again this year. lol

When I opened my Happy Mail from Twiddleybitz and saw the Treasure Chest kit I must admit to doing a little hand clap ;-)
It was so much fun to play with.
I embossed the sides first then put glued it all together.
Touch of paint, then Tim Holtz crackle paint on the lid.
few touches of ink to bring out the details.
It really was a lot of fun.

Escape 2 Create challenge (s)

After reading an article in the current Creating Keepsakes where they challenged you to try a different style and go out of you comfort zone, I thought of a graphic or clean and simple style.
I thought of using Sue's Sketch over at Escape2Create and in the end the layout incorporated more than one of their challenges! ( box challenge..the colour orange, stamp on vintage book paper and date for a title, the colour grey, blackboard, and scrabble pieces)
If you are ever short of mojo or ideas I recommend having a peek at their challenges...!

Normally my style is probably best described as 'random'!
(all over the place!! lol)
I do find clean and simple/ linear/ or graphic styles very difficult and have great respect for those that can achieve it.
I find getting the right balance difficult.
It's much easier to have a 'random' style..if it looks unbalanced you just 'whack' another flower there! lol

I find boy layouts difficult also (bit hard to 'whack another flower' there when its a boys layout.)
I found the Twiddleybitz gears and cogs PERFECT!!
I did print out the journalling but it was all a little toooooo graphic for me.. I had to 'mess it up' a little..so that is where the blackboard challenge was just perfect also.
It just all seemed to fall into place.
But I think I will stick to random layouts...much easier to photograph!! this one looks wonky, but it is straight I promise!! lol

sorry if that all didn't make sense, it is over 40 degrees here and I have had a couple of ciders to help contend with the heat.... (my husband doesn't call me 'Cadbury's for nothing...a glass and a half and I'm gone...and I am over my quota!! lol)

Well DH is having a little nap after a big roast lunch and the kids are happily playing with their new toys, so I thought I might come in and say Merry Christmas to you all and share with you what I made my sister for Christmas

I used the Twiddleybitz 6x6 shadow box and lamp post with gates..so so yummy

I had a play with the Tim Holtz crackle paint!!

LOVE this stuff!!

The crackle mediums never seem to work for me, but this stuff is a cinch!!

just paint it on and your finished!

Recently I received a gorgeous RAK from Leanne Jago...(just love her work and her humour!!)
in amongst all the yummy goodies was a serviette with birds and blossoms.. I LOVED it! It was a bit of a light bulb moment when I saw it and I just had to have a go at decorating my first candle with it.
I found heaps of tutorials on line for decorating with tissue paper, but none with serviettes...hmmm maybe I should of typed in napkins..??
Anyways.... here is the end result...I'm pretty happy with it, putting it in MIL's Chrissy basket.

Hello and welcome to my leg of the Twiddleybitz Christmas
Blog Hop!!

I hope you have enjoyed the hop so far, so much inspiration!!!

I must admit to having a bit of performance anxiety after seeing the girls amazing creations so far!

This is the first time I have ever participated in a bloghop and I am quite excited (and nervous!!)

I would really like to take this opportunity to thank the super generous Nic, Andrew and especially Tiff (for throwing my name into the ring, her support and her friendship) for inviting me to be part of this seriously amazing design team. I'm still pinching myself!

Also thank you to the other DT members who have made me feel so welcome.
You continue to leave me in awe girls and I feel privileged to be part of such an amazing group of ladies.

I have loved every minute of it so far and I have only just begun!

Firstly my fantasy frame
please click on the photos for a closer look!

I painted it several times (as I changed my mind so many times!)

I settled on painting it gold then a layer of antique white.

Now, crackling medium and I haven't had a very happy relationship in the

past, so instead I 'attacked' it with my heat gun until the paint bubbled and then

gently sanded it back to reveal the gold paint underneath.

And I did a bit of beeswaxing on the ATC card...so cool!! (yes Gina ....cooool !!!)

Next is a layout using the Twiddleybitz Xmas Tinsel Border

and Hearts

I covered the flourish with music paper

( yes I am quite mad obviously didn't learn from Ann-Marie's post!!)

and then covered it with dimensional magic

and a bit of ink over the top.

I also covered the heart with music paper, vintage image and then beeswaxed it.

The photo is of myself with my little brother and my Grandmother way back in the early 70's

Next a few cards to share using the Christmas 6 pieces pack

I sent some of my friends a text asking them to pick a colour, (hence the different colours schemes)

I painted the pieces and then 'cooked' it with my heat gun...which gave it a really lovely aged look.

Then a swipe ink on the edges, added a few charms and they were ready to go.

And what's a bloghop with out a prize?

Ever had a photo that made you want to smile and cry at the same time?? I get this reaction when I look at this photo.It was taken not long before my Grandmother (Oma) had a stroke and she hasn't been well since.
I hope the kids do remember her like this.
Happy, full of life and with a twinkle in her eye.

and usually comes up with some great advice which helps me put it all back into perspective.

This photo was taken at Tiff's 40th birthday recently, which was a hoot and a lot of laughs.

This cake is for the XRoad camp this weekend.
LOL.
it is a bit wonky, bumpy and uneven....but I am hoping the kids like it.
It has a torch for the light and as you can see it works....unfortunately, my kids and DH have tried and tested it so often that it had sunk...I did put a piece of cardboard underneath, but as DH advised (AFTER the fact lol) that it might of paid to put a chock of wood under it.

I really enjoy making novelty cakes, here are just a few others I have made in the past. Nothing spectacular but they were a lot of fun to make.

Where,using this painting by Frido Kahlo for inspiration

you create a layout using these criteria:

The other day I happened to be driving around the countryside looking for things to take photos of with my new camera (still learning!!) and happened to spy this hawk in a tree.

I pulled over and took a photo, then it flew away, took another photo. I was quite surprised later on when looking back at the photos that it had actually had a mouse....(yech)

Now a photographer I am NOT!!!(So please don't be tooo critical lol) but I am quite pleased to have caught this on camera..even the out of focus shot of the bird flying turned out okay. lol.

Hope you don't mind me sharing my practice, out of focus, probably over exposed photos with you...be prepared...the way I take photos there might be a few more bad photos coming!! lol

She Colours Outside the Lines

I met Lou at the last Escape 2 Create retreat and I came away totally inspired...looking forward to catching up again at the next E2C mini retreat in October!! Those girls really know how to put on a fantastic retreat and the location is just PERFECT!!

Remembering Lucy

Journalling reads:
Your Great Aunt Lucy with Grandad Cleaver, Nanna Cleaver and her little baby sister, Aunt Ethel.
Nanna tells the story that sadly, Lucy succumbed to diptheria and passed away while her father was
away at war. He didn't find out until he came home from war, walking though the door and calling out, "Where are my 2 girls?"
She was never forgotten.

This photo and the story that it reminds me of, always makes me feel sad, and in some small way I wanted her to be remembered,....even if it is only on a scrapbook page.

This will be my next class at the Sheoak Cottage...Monday 20th September.

YAY!! I actually put all that crochet practice into use!
I punched holes around the paper and then blanket stitched it and then got busy with my crochet hook.

That's how much scrapping I have been doing lately...which is really quite frustrating.
Being very busy with work, being behind with my housework and having no mojo is not a good recipe for scrapping it seems :-(
So, with no scrapping to share, I thought I might share another link with you instead.
I noticed in my feedjit thingy (lol) that I had a few new visitors from the States lately, so being the nosey parker that I am I did a bit of sleuthing and was pleasantly surprised that my little blog (with NO new scrapping!) found its way here. I feel quite honoured!
Make sure you explore her blog further...and check out the other blogs in her lists...(she puts one out every few days I think) Also she has heaps of sketches day from other sites in the same post! What a great idea!!

Well I'm off to do a bit of housework and then I will tackle the ENORMOUS job of cleaning my scraproom!!! Maybe I'll find my mojo somewhere in there!!!

Meeting Mel

A layout for TwiddleyBitz.

This photo was taken at the Escape2Create Retreat back in March.

I really enjoyed meeting Mel. (can you tell ? lol)

Her work is so inspiring and she truly is as lovely irl as she is on the www.

I used certain elements which I think of whenever I think of Mel's work.

TwiddleyBitz, Graphics45, distressing, the colours and that little centre of the crochet flower is a plaster mould that Mel generously showed us how to make at the retreat.

So love being on the DT over at Twiddleybitz...and it's only been a few hours lol.
Here are a couple of layouts and a card I made using some Twiddley goodness.

One of my favourite photos..... taken at Point Drummond.

My step daughter, Kimberley, had a 'fart' noise on her mobile phone...what a great trick to get spontaneous laughter...!!

A card I made for a lady who recently left to go on an overseas holiday! lucky lucky girl!!

Well Mrs July really...
I'm so thrilled to be Guest DT for the month of July over at the TwiddleyBitz ning site
my first Guest DT position!!!

What an amazing honour! If you pop over and have a look in the gallery you will see why.

Crochet

I have really noticed the come back of crochet lately.

Or maybe it just something that stands out when I look at a layout or a card.

I have even taken up trying to crochet myself!

Every Thursday morning a very talented (and VERY patient) lady comes to the Sheoak Craft Cottage and teaches crochet.

Not only am I learning a new craft, but also providing entertainment for my family as I sit there with my tongue poking out, fingers sticking out awkwardly, which in turn creates cramps (how on EARTH can this be good for people suffering arthritis???) and then the inevitable happens... I pull it all out and start again lol.

But I will perservere!! It hasn't beat me....yet :-p

What I am really excited about is using crochet not only to create flowers, but also as trimming or edging on layouts....
